[0.16.30] Crash on start (Linux)

Post by wolfcontracts »

Hi,

I run Factorio with Steam on Debian Unstable. It was working up until a few days ago -- sometime after 0.16.28 (I know 30 hasn't worked, but it's possible 29 worked at first).

All I get is a failed launch -- it tries to launch its window, the screen goes a bit wonky, it clearly looks like a fullscreen application is about to launch... And then it crashes.

Output, I've removed my username:

  29.771 Info CrashHandler.cpp:616: Wrote minidump to /home/MYNAME/.factorio/factorio-dump-current.dmp
I also have the dump available. I've uploaded my current save, and I had a mod or two installed for 0.15, but haven't touched anything else with 0.16.

I use KDE and XWindows, and like I said, this is a new error for me. Factorio is normally stupidly stable.

Other games seem to work fine. So it's definitely just factorio. Please let me know if you need any other info.

Thanks, but does it apply?

I tried running factorio directly from the binary but it doesn't seem to work, either. Is that one tied to steam?

Does it work with steam stable?

Yup. Seems like it's definitely the steam beta.

thanks :)

I am also getting exactly the same behaviour and stack trace in the log as that described by wolfcontracts. Also on Debian Linux (sid) through Steam.

It started about a week ago - I am suspecting a GCC or similar library was upgraded automatically underneath Steam+Factorio since the very first crash happened in-game and neither do background updates. Since then I have tried reinstalling the 0.15 latest, and all the 0.16.28+ releases, and the latest two Steam client updates - the crash has remained present and consistently been the same SIGSEGV in Logger::logStacktrace visible in wolfcontracts dump log. If wanted I can provide a .tar.gz with a dump from clean install of Factorio, no mods etc cluttering the dump up.

Library updates on Linux don’t affect running programs (except under special circumstances that don’t apply to Factorio) so that’s an unlikely cause for the in-game crash.

Steam rolled out some beta updates around that time, though, and switching to Steam stable has fixed it for everyone else.
