A handbrake to stop this rolling beast would be nice

That's weird.
My trains always stop at the end of the rail.
And braking is done with the Up/Down key opposite to the movement direction.

It's normal that a train needs over a kilometre to stop

BTW: AFAIK Handbrakes in trains aren't powerful and used only for holding the train still when "parked"
Also they have special pieces of metal that are put on the rails before and after the car.

Not that I'm all knowledgeable but i think the main use for handbrakes in cars it to keep them parked too? XD

I hope so.
But some people use the handbrake for rapid braking and making their car spin. :P

Spin - yes, but it just blocks your wheels, so it is NOT a faster way to stop a car than normal brake :)
Hand brake is also called "parking brake" - hence the name tells, it is best suited for keeping the car (or locomotive) parked.

Pressing the opposite direction key didn't help you to stop your train?

To clear up i hop out of the train mid-track not on the ends
I use it to get around my base

The thing usually glides for awhile even when i think i stopped it
It'll be moving like 1 pixel a second and just keep sliding around

A handbrake would just hold it there once i come to a dead stop

Would be neat.

if(speed<1 && train is unoccupied) {speed=0}
Sounds simple enough! :)

Sounds good to me..
The train could simply brake a little bit when unoccupied.

After all, regular trains actually apply their full braking power when they are turned on and detect that the "driver" is missing or asleep.
That of course does not apply here, because you turn the train off when you leave.

I think the solution might to have a buffer at the end of the track or put in a loop so it can slow down without going miles
