[2.0.7] Map zoom level is not saving

Post by Dixi »

Steam client, updated from previous version 1.x.x. Win 64. Only 3 Wube mods.
Started a new game, default settings, with little modified resource richness.
When I press 'm' or tab to see the map it always opens at maximum zoom.
I change map zoom using mouse wheel (up).
After I close map and open it again - it do not store zoom level and opens same max zoomed.

This is working as intended. Every time Remote View (previously "map") is opened from the hot key or by clicking the minimap, the zoom level is reset to the same default level.

However, with Factorio 2.0, new navigation controls have been added for "Back" and "Forward" (Mouse-4 and Mouse-5 by default) that will allow you to navigate back to the previous view positions and zoom levels. I hope that this new navigation feature will be a sufficient replacement.

This should be an option, for me M4/5 are PTT keys and it's far more intuitive to have my map key open the current surface map at whatever it was last zoomed to.

Okay, it's not a bug, but confusing feature.

Of course, for a lot of MMO players, Mouse 4 or/and Mouse 5 is binded to Discord or other voice PTT, and will be used exclusively for that purpose only.

Switching several map views with Alt-left/right might be useful later, but having an option to open/close last used view with one button could be nice. I would bind TAB there.

Can we have it, when time permit, please?

This is a real UX issue. The Back and Forward functions are not a replacement for this, regardless of what button they're bound to. The Back function doesn't necessarily open the map with the most recently used pan and zoom (which is what we need). It navigates backward in your history, so if you toggle the map multiple times in a row this way, the map opens with a pan and zoom you used at some other point in the past, which is of course confusing and not helpful.

The changes to the remote view are terrible.
The default M key forces the remote view to open with a zoom size that would be observed by ants every time it is opened.
It's simply not user-friendly.
When you use the back or forward buttons, the normal map view is interrupted, and if you've memorized the ABCD map, navigating between points A to D becomes cumbersome.
You have to switch between views like this: Normal (N) β†’ A β†’ N β†’ B β†’ N β†’ C β†’ N β†’ D.
Additionally, if you have another window open(station,technology,buildplanner...etc), the display gets interrupted, which is incredibly frustrating.
It would be much better to have a feature where you can save the zoom level using the M key, and add a button that saves the positions of ABCD in the blank space to the right of where it says "Remote View."

I don't deny that there is a forward and backward function, but it should not be the main remote view operation, and there was no reason to remove the zoom size save function at all if it can be done in remote view.

PTT = Push to talk ?

----

Remote view uses 2 buttons now, maybe make 'Tab' go back to previous zoom level, while 'M (or ',', or '.', depending on keyboard layout) would go to default zoom ?

While using back and forward keys would be a really awkward workaround i tried it anyway.
- Open map, zoom it back.
- Close map.
- Open map (game is zoomed in now).
- Press back key, map is now closed...
2.0 broke the map feature - confirmed :(

The order would be:
  1. Open map
  2. Zoom in
  3. Close map
  4. Press back key (remote view is opened to same position and zoom as step 2)
Because the character view is part of your view history.

How about instead Home key to reset remote view zoom level (to map zoom level) ?
(F9 already also works on remote view for the 'ground' zoom level... but then maybe it could be changed to the End key ?)

P.S.: Alternatively, Home might make more sense for a remote view jump to the 0-0 grid coordinates, or the Cargo Landing pad / Space Platform hub (since there's only one of them per surface).

There is no UI button for back key, also Mouse-4 to me drops 1 item to ground or in machine as i've set it. In any case back would never replace "open map" key and i have yet to hear a valid reason why its zoom must reset. What does anyone gain from it? I have yet to hear an argument FOR the feature, only complaints.

As explained maybe enough times, the map opens so zoomed in that it is useless for any purpose.

Also does Mouse-4 work as "back" function to me in Windows in general? No, i unbound that super fast as it was really annoying.
(Imagine writing some long reply on forums and then thumb accidentally hits the sensitive little button... aaaargh!)

Can folks post screenshots of what happens when you open remote view? It shouldn't be zoomed all the way in or all the way out, but it should be at the same functional zoom level in the map view every time it is opened.

For me the bigger problem is that the old 1.1 functionality was entirely replaced and there's no key to go "open remote view centered on the player at the previous zoom level", not that the new system isn't working exactly as it was intended.

Ok, in that case, I recommend posting to the Ideas and Suggestions forums so that it can be discussed and prioritised properly.
