Hello,

I'm running (unmodded) factorio through steam on Nobara Linux

Hardware:
5800x3d
6900xt
32GB ram

Yesterday I tried to launch the game (just like I have every day for the last two weeks) and received this error:

If I force the game to use the proton compatibility layer I get a different error message after the game redownloads:

Interestingly the game seems to crash so quickly that no logs are generated. My most recent log was from the last time I successfully played the game.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, checking the integrity of the game files, uninstalling and deleting the .factorio folder before reinstalling, clearing steam download cache before reinstalling, and of course, restarting the PC a thousand times.

Downloading and running the version from factorio.com works fine but I'd really like to get my steam version working again.

Any help is much appericiated.

I did a full OS reinstall. I was really hoping that would fix the issue but it did not.

I got it working!

After the OS reinstall i tried running the game with proton again. This time I got a different error message:

This turned out to be slightly more google-able and I found a few fixes.

I was able to fix the problem by first running the game with the proton compatibility layer (I used experimental) then either:

Adding the "d3dcompiler_47.dll" file to the same directory as "factorio.exe"

or

Adding "--force-opengl" to my launch options.

Both options allow factorio to launch successfully!

Please reproduce the crash without proton and upload the crash log so I can look at it.

There is absolutely no reason to run factorio under proton. We have native Linux compatibility.

The workaround to launch it using proton came from a post on the subreddit made by someone having a similar issue on arch. I'm aware of the native compatibility but as I stated in my original post, no logs are generated by the crash. In fact, after launching from a fresh install, the only files in my '.factorio' folder are my saves folder (presumably synced from steam cloud). The game seems to simply be crashing too early to generate any logs.

The only errors I've gotten are the screenshots I've already included.

Please try running the game on the command line and see if it prints anything to stdout.

I am having the same issue. I'm running Fedora Linux 40 with Factorio version 2.0.15 with Space Age and no mods. This only is happening on the steam version and not the version downloaded from factorio.com. As others have stated the game crashes too soon for it to generate any factorio logs and the steam console logs seems to be the only additional information available.

The odd thing is I was playing the steam version perfectly fine a few days ago, but even attempting to run older versions through the steam beta selection crashes for the same reason.

I am also seeing this problem on Ubuntu 24.04.1. Tried rolling Factorio back to 2.0.12 and ran into the same issue. Crashes before Factorio itself creates any log files. AMD Ryzen 9 7950X and Radeon RX 7900 XT. I was just playing fine earlier last week.

Same. Arch Linux, Factorio 2.0 was running fine up until 11/4. Now I can't launch the game on 2 computers, Factorio crashes after about 3-5 seconds before showing any UI. Steam (non-flatpak), nvidia, nothing fancy. I tried disabling steam overlay, verifying files and reinstalling, clearing proton cache, no luck.
