indicator for mines that ran out of deposits
I would like to see an indicator showing that mine has run out of deposits.
It is really hard to see which burner extractors don't have any more deposits and have to be removed :/

I can't disagree
I just need to find some good icon for that ...

Re: indicator for mines that ran out of deposits
what about an orange square/circle?
with an exclamation mark for the symbol?
or maybe a lightning bold on a stone?
pestering stops now

I would support if it wasn't expressed by an icon.
The drill can prepare itself for transportation or something instead.
Say.. park it's head next to the output, fold the blades, .. something like that

Re: indicator for mines that ran out of deposits
I don't think that icon expresses “empty” as a state, rather “to empty” as an action.
I agree that even better than an icon would be some easily visible change in the drill's appearance.
If you want to make it really obvious, the drill could just mine itself and spawn as an item ready to be picked up. Actually, if it spawned at the same place as the minded resources used to appear, you could collect all your empty drills with a filter inserter. But I suspect many players would hate such a feature :-D

Hm. I think this is a cool idea, but not easy to understand. But funny.
To the icon: how about a display on each mine, like the battery icon in a laptop?
Displays: full, half empty (if more than half of the fields doesn't contain any resource), nearly empty (only 10% left) and empty. Then it is gets red and maybe blinking.

Re: indicator for mines that ran out of deposits
I think that we have enough icons.
Few more and factorio might need a warning-icon-manual/brochure.
I would definitely favor other means, where they are possible.

Re: indicator for mines that ran out of deposits
I agree with MF- and especially like ssilk's idea. It could be implemented in a manner similar to the steam engine.
Re: indicator for mines that ran out of deposits
I had other idea.
What if mining drills that mined everything would just become rusty ruins of the miner instead.
The player could mine the ruins for some almost useless resources, so he would usually leave those mining sites there, this would play nicely with the game atmosphere.

Re: indicator for mines that ran out of deposits
+1 I like this idea, though preferably only on larger resources, I wouldn't really like putting a miner down to get a small pile, say just a couple hundred iron, and having it rustkovarex wrote:I had other idea.

Re: indicator for mines that ran out of deposits
Is it possible to have such a more or less similar indication also for chests? (counting stacks?)

additinal thoughts: limited drill lifetime (like 30k blocks or so? after that u need to replace it?)
Re: indicator for mines that ran out of deposits
Not too bad, the longer I think about it.
Important in my eyes: Robots can repair them. Factories, etc. gets old, too. Just logic.
Hm. On the other hand: does it bring the game forward, does it make it "round"? I'm not so sure. I see this for a mod.

Depleted mines: Status icon
Mines will eventually have harvested all resources on the ground they are placed on and shut down as a result. Early on you can see this fairly easily because the mines don't animate anymore, but as your factory grows and mining fields get larger it can become hard to spot which mines are depleted. Would it be possible to flash a status icon to warn a player that this is why the building is inactive, similar to the "no power" icon?
It'd be especially handy with the Burner Drills since you can't see the ground around those being cleared.
It shouldn't cause too much overhead I think - you can set it during the check that looks for what ore to mine. If none is found, set the warning.

Re: Depleted mines: Status icon
I think you can do this yourself with programmable speakers. Connect them to a drill, set them to work when the mine is empty and set a warning, that will be displayed next to the toolbar. It will even show an icon on the map.
Re: Depleted mines: Status icon
That'll work for one drill. Now a megabase in a vanilla railworld game with over three dozen mines active...

Re: Depleted mines: Status icon
Wire up the belts in front of the Inserters, plus a few leading up, and connect that to the speaker to alarm when ([All] = 0).

Re: Depleted mines: Status icon
I disagree to needing to wire up a speaker.
We have status icons for missing construction bots and items unable to be placed in blueprints. I'd really like to see a "mine depleted" icon.

Re: Depleted mines: Status icon
I really like how AutoDeconstruct does it, marking them for destruction when done. Then you can see the X on them and grab them, or later in the game bots just take care of it for you. If the base game did this I'd be quite happy.
