I believe the mech armor should extend the reach of a player to the borders of the visible screen.
When you reach the point where you can fly anywhere anyway, you should also just be able to interact with more stuff.
At the moment the player already can reach a few tiles further than his "real" arm length, so he must have a little remote anyway, but in mech armor he is flying and therefore because of no obstacles his "remote" should reach further.
I actually install the "Far reach" mod after getting mech armor, and don't think it hurts the play.

By the time I had Mech Armor my player was just parked immobile on Gleba and I was doing everything remotely with robots and RC tanks. You don't need reach by the time you get it.

OK, not me. I nearly finished Aquillo and still walk around like on day one. Maybe I play the game wrong, but I don't have unlimited mall space yet, and building everything with bots is IMHO a very advanced playing style.

The problem is you can't use bots to plant trees, upgrade / remove biter spawners, and it's very awkward when killing demolishers. Manual destruction of yellow chests is also much faster for a hoarder like me. These are niche but useful operations.
