On the Apple Macintosh the shortcut to the map editor is not as described in the book but is control-option-E

There is no shortcut to the editor in vanilla factorio.

The default debug keybind for toggling the map editor in vanilla is shift + ctrl/cmd + f11. Are you maybe using the editor extensions mod? It has a keybind for toggling the map editor that is more similar to what you are describing.
