Please leave those configuration check box always enabled, there is not a single reason to disable them

TL;DR
Please leave those configuration check box always enabled

What?
Leave the checkbox for using red / green wires enabled, instead of disabling it while the cable with that color is not connected.

We can literally make it work by connecting the cable, check or uncheck the box and then removing the cable. But, WHY, why would we have to do all this, just leave them enabled, disabling them bring no benefit.

When I do logic, I usually place the combinators and set the signals and conditions without cable and would love to do the same with the combinator red, green boxes now.

I really don't understand the decision of blocking the checkboxes with the space age update. Trash unrequested in player inventory has the exact same problem.

The game already supports having them checked or unchecked while they are enabled or disabled. Make 0 cense having them disabled.
It is just a bad design with no benefit whatsoever.

This feels more like a bug, left over from when there was something hooked to those boxes, but was long fixed and left disabled anyways, but if I post as bug, it will just get marked as "not a bug", so suggestion it is.....

here, all combinations with them enabled and disabled working just fine inside the game.

Same for combinators, but I won't past all combinations as it is already enough to show the point.

Why?
It doesn't do any good to the game, by the contrary, make it worst without been needed, as I already mentioned before, the game is already capable of handling all possible combinations with checked and enabled at the same time, just leave them enabled.
Having to add a wire just to be able to check/uncheck and then remove the wire is non sense

+1 for combinator inputs. It is incredibly tedious having to close the UI, connect something, anything to the input and then reopen to configure. I get that it is trying to "teach me" that I have to connect a wire to use the input but once I am up to speed, all this does is create unnecessary friction.

Probably the developer thought process was that people connect wires first then configure. However there are multiple reasons configuring first then connecting is a valid setup process. Specifying complicated conditions on live input (especially when the output is being fed back in) can cause bad data to be sent down the line. I would rather avoid that.

+1, but OP I think you put the wrong pictures in the first post? I see several versions of the "trash unrequested" inventory checkbox instead if the R/G circuit wire selector. And change the title to explain what "those" checkboxes are.

As of 2.0.57 there is a new hidden setting called "circuit-network-selection-always-enabled" that forces the checkboxes in combinators to always be enabled regardless of whether a wire is connected or not.

The "Trash unrequested" checkbox is specifically disabled when personal logistics are disabled because the game specifically does not do trash-unrequested logic when personal logistics are disabled and we had bug reports/confusion where players would check-uncheck the setting and wonder why it wasn't working.
If you want to get ahold of me I'm almost always on Discord.

TL;DR: Allow clicking a disabled checkbox to toggle its check mark.

The words enabled/disabled refer to two separate states:
  • Whether the checkbox can be toggled.
  • Whether the checkbox is drawn grayed out.
What I want is for the disabled status to only affect how it is drawn. However, in-game it also affects whether it can be toggled. Showing those boxes as grayed out to indicate that they do nothing, is useful feedback. (The "circuit-network-selection-always-enabled" setting unfortunately disables that feedback). However, not being able to toggle them causes frustration in the following usecases:
  • Disabling trash unrequested before enabling personal logistics.
  • Configuring combinators before connecting them.
I think that players will be quick to figure out that toggling a disabled checkbox does nothing. However, to improve that:
  • Add an informative tooltip (some disabled checkboxes already have one).
  • Attach a sound that communicates "the switch was toggled, but this does nothing" (e.g. an unpowered breaker switch).
