Poison is by far one of the Factorio's hidden OP item.

With poison you can get rid of trees easily, especially if you are inside a vehicle.
On the ideea you are in a protected vehicle, you can kill the worms (in case of Behemoth, throw mutiple at the same ones)
The more you throw the more damage (aka they stack).
Small demolisher kill (again, mutiple at once) OR if you want to trigger it from a safe location (aka to follow you without you risking anything damage)
Get rid of small enemies to avoid waste of ammo (try it on Gleba, and you'll see what I mean)
Work amazing against a Certain large Enemy found on gleba Ieven if you are not at the stage to actually fight them.
looks expensive but easily becomes "cheap" as you expand your factory

Bonus: it kills the worm, not the nest, meaning you don't need to constantly destroy enemy base, due to migration, since there will be no worm attacking you. And of course, easier destroy the enemy base via turrets, it's just time consuming.

What you don't get: research related to it.

Like imunity if you wear a mech armour.
Increase the size of AoE (this is something the atomic bomb also needs)
Increase of damage aside from quality related
and of course, one of the main reason why most people don't use poison, no way to use it automatically.
Bonus: attack bots and mines that throw poision. Mind you, for the poision mines I am actually thinking of them triggering when destroyed. Aka if enemy destroy it, it will release the poision, and of course, this include them getting destroyed by flamethrouwers as they attack the enemy. Creating massive amount of damage and hopefull triggering the devs to add quality to enemys even without mods to even out the balance since currently, poision did not recive anything because it's already OP except it's time consuming the stronger or larger the enemy is (good luck killing a legendary rank Large demolisher using poison)
For the automatic part, why can't we just use the flamethrowers? In the pipes, we send the poison (liquid, gas, dosen't matter), and when enemy attacks, we throw not fire, but this acide to ger rid of eveything. Man, this could actually make flamethrougher extremly OP exactly due to stack damage

And of course, if anyone ever looked at mods using poision, what i just wrote is out out of many, including the long range poison shells.
