Managing the inconsistent production rate of the Agricultural Tower

Post by AngryHungryGoose »

TL;DR
Allow to regulate the production rate of the Agricultural Tower.

What?
The Agricultural Tower could have an option to regulate the harvesting rate.
The simplest solution would be an option to force the tower to harvest plants in even intervals, depending on the number of growing plants.
We could also get an option to set a specific harvest rate, but I do not know if that is a great idea.

Why?
Currently, the Agricultural Tower harvests plants as fast as it can, depending on available space in its storage and fully grown plants. This means it will harvest them at a variable rate - in the best cases it will be small variations repeated every about 5 minutes, but it can also easily produce a huge amount of resources in short bursts (especially if it's a newly placed tower; over time they tend to self-regulate somewhat though not even close to a consistent rate). This can be extremely harmful to a factory designed for constant throughput to optimize freshness.

Adding a form of regulation in the Agricultural Tower itself would be a nice QoL feature to replace circuits (like clocks connected to belts or inserters) or other setups for managing the output of the Agricultural Towers, most of which require at least some buffering and consequently produce waste and reduce the freshness of the final products, or have some other forms of inefficiency. They also require additional front-loaded effort from the engineer, which is already plenty thanks to everything else related to freshness.

Just set chest as buffer and enable towers if *buffer less than X*
There are no any factories that have similar function as you asked, but if its needed - it can be made over circuit. Not sure why Agri towers should have this.

I am very well aware there's a lot of solid solutions for this that use circuits or bots, I have made a few myself. However, using a chest as a buffer significantly reduces the freshness of the product, so it kinda proves my point.

The underlying issue why I think the Agricultural Tower should have this function is that it is the only production / processing building with inconsistent output in the game, specifically in a place where it matters a lot because of spoilage. It would not be a big change by any means, but it could make production much easier to manage for fresh players and just give us more options to choose from.

Actually you can do this even without circuits. Plant plants manually at desirable time interval and tower will gather and plant them as they grow. Do not want to do manual work? Then setup circuits timers to turn tower on/off at desired interval. Also you may read number of fruits on belt, which eliminate need for buffer chest.
As was already mentioned, there is no need to treat towers in different way than other similar situations(nuclear plant, train stations, thrusters etc).
