What did you do?
I have set up burner inserters to remove spoilage from bioreactors.
Initially the burner inserter fuels itself with spoilage and operates as expected.
Probably irrelevant: each inserter has a filter set to whitelist: spoilage (no quality overlay – i.e. quality 1)
What happened?
I have returned to Gleba after several hours of gameplay to find a subset (5-10%?) of the burner inserters flashing with the "no fuel" icon, despite the associated source bioreactor having spoilage in the fuel slot and the output slot. When I add fuel using a bot, the inserter proceeds to operate as expected.
What did you expect to happen?
The inserter should fuel itself with spoilage, as soon as spoilage is available in the source bioreactor
When does it happen?
This only affects a subset of the inserters I've set up in this way (so far). My guess is that when the inserter ran out of fuel, the bioreactor happened not to contain any spoilage; and that when bioreactor contents spoil, the inserter does not repeat its check for available fuel.

Without a save file this bug report is incomplete.

Re: [2.0.72] Burner inserter won't fuel with spoilage
Thanks for the report however I'm not seeing any bug here. If spoilage isn't available for the inserter(s) to use at the time they are low on fuel they will continue to move standard items. If they eventually run fully out of power they are stuck forever until something *externally* puts fuel in them. They can never grab more fuel for themselves once out of power.
Unless you know of a way to get a burner inserter to ignore fuel while it still has energy left. If you do, please let us know.

Re: [2.0.72] Burner inserter won't fuel with spoilage
Actually, I may have figured out the issue.
* Burner inserters will grab "any acceptable fuel item" when they are low on fuel
* The burner inserter is grabbing a pentapod egg for fuel
* As the burner inserter fuel bar approaches zero (and while it's mid-swing) the pentapod egg in the fuel slot spoils
* This leaves the burner inserter with no energy and no fuel items to burn - stuck mid swing.
You can resolve this by setting a filter on the fuel slot for spoilage.

This doesn't quite match my experience. When I place a new burner inserter, it grabs an available fuel item for itself, without my having externally put fuel into it.
> the pentapod egg in the fuel slot spoils
Then the resulting spoilage ought to remain in the fuel slot and be used as fuel, rather than being removed from the fuel slot, no?

Re: [2.0.72] Burner inserter won't fuel with spoilage
Burner Inserters spawn with an internal energy buffer of 500 kJ - that's why you don't need to feed them on the start.
Re: [2.0.72] Burner inserter won't fuel with spoilage
`pentapod-egg` spoils to trigger (spawns wriggler pentapods), not to an item. Because of that if it spoils while in the fuel inventory, it will leave fuel slot empty.ms609 wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 8:56 am Then the resulting spoilage ought to remain in the fuel slot and be used as fuel, rather than being removed from the fuel slot, no?
