How to get power?

so i set up an offshore pump 2 pipes and 3 boilers and connected them to a steam engine put down a power cable thing and nothing happens please help

You need to insert some sort of fuel (wood, coal) into the boilers. They will then heat up the water and the sngines will start.
Also be aware that the engines will only generate energy, when energy is needed. So if no machines are connected to them, they will not generate anything.

One thing that may be confusing - the steam engines will show the "no power" symbol as long as there is no power consumer connected!
Did you connect power lines between your steam engines and something that needs power?

It actually shows the not connected symbol, no power symbol is the red triangle one.

A small point but people seem to mix them up often.
