Is there any way to use durability in machines?

I'm currently trying to modify holmium ore to have durability and use them for make more solutions based on quality.
Adding durability was simple (just modified item to tool, may not stable) but machines are using entire item for crafting.

Here's potential solutions that not tried due to idk how to do it: make new machine or modify one to work like turret (ammo count) or lab (science packs durability)

Will it work or should I found other way?
Also if it works, is there anywhere describes it? (code from existing mods are fine)
