[2.0.66] Crash/ScreenFreeze on startup

Place for things which are bugs but we have no idea how to solve them. Things related to hardware, libraries, strange setups, etc.

[2.0.66] Crash/ScreenFreeze on startup

Post by Loup&Snoop »

I was working on my mod development. When I booted up factorio, during data stage, my whole screen straight up froze, l then turned black. I had a youtube music video in the background, and it kept making sound for several minutes until it finished while everything was black. Factorio music does not go on to play ever. Trying to exit (CTRL ALT DEL, windows key, alt tab) did not work. Unplugging-replugging in monitor cables did not work. Restarting my computer, and booting up factorio again leads to no issues. This makes it very hard to reproduce. Unfortunately, I cannot provide a proper method for reproduction.

This is not the first time this happens, but it is the first time I was able to catch a decent log file to actually diagnose. See attached.

I had mods, but from the log, it looks to be unrelated.

Thanks for the report however this seems to be an issue with the graphics card and or graphics card driver. The driver has reported an error code of DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG to Factorio and then killed itself and attempted to restart the graphics driver.

Unless you know of a way to reliably reproduce this?
If you want to get ahold of me I'm almost always on Discord.

Sorry, but I have no idea how to reproduce this error reliably. This is like the 4th time this happens to me since May. So it isn't a total anomaly, but it is very sporadic.

I only ever noticed this being an issue when I started modding, and having VScode open with mod files (and I was not writing these files to disk at the same time as booting factorio). It could be related to either having mod files open, or just a factorio/driver version change back in May (maybe April?).

I apologize if this isn't the most useful bug report. At least it isn't the most annoying thing since I can just restart my computer.

I'll let you know if I figure out the cause, but don't hold your breath.

GPU core should never hang, when it happens its usually software problem (Windows drivers) or hardware problem (overheat, permanent damage to the GPU, or power supply issue).

Few things come to mind:

See if you can reproduce this problem on Linux.
Test stability of your Nvidia GPU using Furmark.
Change/reinstall Nvidia drivers, and/or reinstall them completely.
Reset Windows to Factory settings.
Check temperatures especially during Furmark testing.

That being said, well written GPU driver on stable hardware can last forever without GPU core hanging. I am using Radeon 6800 XT on Linux, and did not had hang or reset, reboot or anything like that in over 2 years. And PC is turned on 24/7.
