Increase steam cloud storage

Post by fi5hii »

TL;DR
Please increase the amount of cloud storage factorio has.

What?
If I see this correctly every game developer can set the amount of steam cloud storage a game is allowed to have and I would request to have that increased to the maximum that steam allows (I think it's 93GB?)
Why?
I recieved this warning today after playing the game since 2017:

I was quite shocked to see that but I do play on two PCs (home PC and travel PC) and this feature is really valuable to me.
I went to check how much I actually have used and it was a little over 23GB:

Yes I probably am a rare case of this happening because I have OCD and save my saves like this:

my saves.png (68.05 KiB) Viewed 364 times
It is possible to copy paste some of my old saves into mediafire and keep them there instead of steam cloud but since other games that really don't need it have way more storage than factorio like for example poly bridge 3 has 93GB available:

It would be really nice to see the increase of this for factorio so I and also others who might encounter this can continue using the feature without the need of storing our save files somewhere else.

Wube has absolutely no control on Steam's cloud storage, you will have to consult with Valve/Steam over this issue.

Steamworks Documentation - Steam Cloud:
To set up Steam Cloud you must set the Byte quota per user and Number of files allowed per user options on the Steam Cloud Settings page in the Steamworks App Admin panel.

This quota is enforced on each Cloud-enabled game, on a per-user-per-game basis. It's recommended to set the values to reasonable amounts for your game title.
This is a per-AppID value controlled by the Game Developer, not by Steam or the User (you and me).

While I do not currently have access to a Steam Developer account, from prior experience (and plenty of Internet Search results, and the obvious screenshot provided for another game in the top post), I can tell you that the maximum accepted in the Steam App Admin panel is 100,000,000,000 bytes = 93.13 Gibibytes. Choosing to set it a lower limit is a tradeoff of Support complaints between "I want more storage space!" and "This Game has taken up all my Storage Space!"

Wube Software has (apparently) taken a middle ground: 25,000,000,000 bytes = 23.28 Gibibytes, or 1/4 of the Maximum. Loading a Factorio save which is >1GiB takes a substantial amount of System Memory; and such a large map tends to be limited by System CPU performance (aka Updates-Per-Second). With 3 Autosave slots it is therefore somewhat difficult to reach the Limit... but it is certainly possible! I think that the current Autosave Strategy leaves something to be desired; if increased through a Date- or Session-based strategy it would definitely make sense to increase the Byte Quota Per User to the Steamworks Maximum as well.

Thank you for clarifying this, I don't really understand the argument of "This Game has taken up all my Storage Space!" since every game has a different total you can store for and doesn't take away from another, while even if you surpass this threshold you can still store the files locally and not sync to cloud so the game could "take up all storage space" no matter if the limit is on 1/4 or maximum.

I agree that if you only save your world once aka overwriting the old file every time you save it's difficult to reach the limit but I like to save at "milestones" to have saves in somewhat of a timeline and after hundreds of gameplay hours and having around 20 saves per game world it piles up. I know that most people won't use it up but there's literally no reason to not increase this in my opinion, the people who will need it benefit from it and the people who don't need it won't even notice it changed.

I will again use poly bridge as an example of the save file being under 100MB yet they have the max amount possible because why not.

Consider this chain of events:
  • Start with an old-but-reliable computer, with a slow 2 Terabyte Hard Drive and integrated graphics
  • Install a game which saves LOTS of data, and play it for a few months
  • Grandma visits your local used car salesman totally honest electronics shoppe to buy a new Gaming Laptop for your Birthday
  • Re-install all your favorite games. This takes a long time so you leave the computer overnight and it goes to Sleep Mode
  • The computer suddenly will not boot! It complains that the C:\ drive (256Gigabyte Solid State Disk, minus a 50GiB recovery partition, and 32GiB swap file) is now completely full!
Who is to blame in this scenario?
  • Grandma, for not reading all the Technical Specifications before spending $2000
  • User who did not think about the 100Gigabytes of Auto Sync data before installing all the games they are used to playing on their old computer
  • Faceless multinational conglomerate behind the Operating System that FORCES power saving options, and with confusing error messages
  • The game developer who set the per-User Save data quota to the maximum value “just in case”; ignoring the documentation’s call for a Reasonable Value.
The average video game player is likely to pin the blame on #4, and if they are sufficiently angry their Grandma may even threaten to sue the Game Developer! There is little technical merit behind their claim, but Users are often reluctant to admit their own error. This is a real-life story from the Technical Support desk at a previous job, as crazy as it may seem. In the end we upgraded them to a larger SSD, and called off the lawyers.

yeah okay but increasing steam storage doesn't improve that... as I said you can still have them saved locally and fill up your drive
