I have run into an issue when trying to run my Steam version of Factorio on the Geforce Now streaming service.
When I select a saved game to load, the Mod Sync window pops up asking me if I want to sync the mods that were used in the saved game. When I tell it to sync, the game shut down to do it's usual restart. Unfortunately, the Geforce Now virtual machine disconnects at this point. When I start the game up again, the mods have not been synced and the whole process starts again.
Does anyone have a workaround for this issue, other than disabling all mods?
Can't load mods when running on Geforce Now
Re: Can't load mods when running on Geforce Now
Disclaimer: I have not used GeForce Now in a long time, so my understanding is probably out-of-date.
The cloud scheduling system does not guarantee that you will receive the same “Instance” each time a game restarts; in fact it basically ensures that you do not. The machine Disconnecting represents a stop/start cycle; and each game is then loaded “fresh” from the system cache when you reconnect. Any local data (such as downloaded Mods) is therefore lost when the game restarts. This seems to be a common issue with other heavily-modded games like Rimworld.
I believe this is meant to reduce the possibility of a user escaping the Game sandboxing - or prevent the service being used for anything other than playing games, like crypto mining or hacking.
Good Luck!

Re: Can't load mods when running on Geforce Now
Thank you for the explanation. It makes sense.
I would think that this could be fixed by having the Factorio executable not exiting/restarting but just going back to the initial startup code without actually exiting.

Re: Can't load mods when running on Geforce Now
Never used it myself but there is a command line option to sync mods with save on startup. --sync-mods FILE
Does that work?

I cant find a way to edit the command line options in GeForce now.
Re: Can't load mods when running on Geforce Now
OK, I think I have it working now.
After my initial post, it dawned on me that the version of Factorio running on GFN did not have the Space Age DLC installed.
I managed to figure out how to do that:
- In GFN, go to Factorio and click on the green PLAY button. The virtual machine will get loaded.
- Connect to the VM, and you will see the Steam UI showing you have one game. Right click on the "Factorio" game name in the game list on the left side and select "Properties"
- Click on "DLC" , then check the box for "Factorio: Space Age". The DLC will start to load. You can close the Manage window.
- Wait for the DLC to finish downloading and launch Factorio.
I was then able to load my saved game.
