I get serious fps drops when running close to my electricity factory. Currently 9 engines and 15 boilers. Rest of the game runs great. OSX 10.12.5, nvidia gtx 650m, steam.
If this not a known issue, are there in-game profiling tools I can use to help narrow down the cause?

It's a known thing. Steam is mostly transparent, a large image, and there are several of them on screen at the same time due to how much is produced from engines.
On medium/lower end cards all of that combined results in low FPS.
