[0.2.10] Smelting progress not reset on recipe changes

I am not sure whether this is a bug or not..
Sometimes (due to my poor smelting layout) my furnaces start producing steel (btw: "Steel plates"? they look like ingots) instead of iron plates.
This bug/feature prevents me from converting the furnace back by removing the input iron plates. (the inserter immediately puts iron ore in, which should lock the furnace on the iron-plate recipe. But the iron ore gets insta-smelted and thus the furnace is empty again and gets loaded with the steel recipe again)

Get a furnace
Load fuel
Put 5 iron plates in, wait till they are almost cooked, remove them.
Put 3 iron ores in. (In my case there was an inserter holding the ore above the furnace, ready to drop it)

Observed: At least two of them get insta-smelted.
Expected: Smelting progress of one recipe does not carry over to another one.

As of 0.6.1 the ingredients are taken upfront which solves this bug.
