factorio crashes

Post by ustar »

This game can be interesting.
However when trying to run factorio.exe it always crashes with error like this (bug was in Factorio_0.2.10 and still is in Factorio_0.4.1.4573):
Wystąpił problem z aplikacją Factorio.exe i zostanie ona zamknięta. Przepraszamy za kłopoty.
Przekaż informacje o tym problemie firmie Microsoft.
AppName: factorio.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: factorio.exe
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 000bb034

Using Athlon XP Mobile and GeForce 5900 if this can help.

That error message is unfortunately useless. (Even without a translation attempt)
Is there any "show me details" button?
Can you run in from a console?

mmm
I didn't translate it, because it is standard XP message when some application crashes, it means:
"Error occured with apllication Factorio.exe and it will be closed. Sorry for problems.
Send information about this problem to Microsoft company."
...
Of course it be a little different text in english version of Windows, but I don't have english Windows so I translated it myself.
And sending information to Microsoft I think is useless, because it is not their program.
Application simply just crashes on ATTEMPT to run.
When I click on "to see what is in errors report" there is text "Error signature" with:
AppName: factorio.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: factorio.exe
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 000bb034
and then there are 2 links: 1-to technical information and 2 - about data gathering rules
technical informations are Exception Information
Code: 0xc000001d Flags: 00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address: 0x00000000004bb034

and then System Information about used system and used CPU
and then loaded modules which is simply too much to write and there is no possibility to select text and copy+paste in this window.

Simply game crashes when trying to launch it and there is no console or anything except this standard Microsoft error reporting.

As far as I know this 0x000001d-Error means "illegal instruction". The CPU tries to execute a non-existing command.
Could be caused by hardware problems. For example some bits on the harddisk swapped. Or the CPU gets too hot. By software: The compiler produces some illegal opcodes or the program was overwritten by itself. Not very probable, hardware problems are much more probable.

I would recommend to reinstall the game before searching other causes. :)
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

I just now downloaded newest both .exe installer and .zip package and installed/unpacked and in both cases problem is still the same.
My CPU have temperature 65 C as shown in program VIA HWM, while it can operate up to 90 C or maybe more since is Mobile version of Athlon XP and my other programs/games work well so is not processor fault.
Note you missed small letter C in 0xc000001d so is 0xC000001D not 0x0000001d, but is much possible to be compiler that insert/produce some code that crashes on Athlon XP and maybe other CPUs.
For example I had one program that was written to use SSE2 and it crashed on my computer, while the same program without SSE2 work without problems. Athlon XP support CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 1 SSE2: 0 though I read somewhere that AMD work better with 3DNow than SSE.

0xc0... not 0x00, yes my fault. Not copy/pasted it.

Hm. You may try to exclude the problems. You may start in secured mode to avoid problems with other drivers/hardware. To be sure, not having a hardware-problem you might run some benchmarks to warm up the cpu...

If I would be a developer I would also like to know which CPU you exactly have. I normally use CPU-Z for that and export all as text.

Yes, just downloaded latest demo version that is Factorio_0.5.1.5299 and problem is still the same with crashing.

About the CPU-Z there is problem with stability of this application, means most of time it hangs computer and I have to reset. I am tired of chkdsk running so many times because of stupid CPU-Z detection problem. Anyway I disabled all detection in cpuz.ini to see if it helps and was lucky to get and save report, then closed CPU-Z and run it again and it still hang computer when doing detection :x :( It may be CPU-Z trying to detect new features of new processors 64 bit multicore and many new instructions like SSE... etc. but my CPU is kind of old only 32 bit single core. Still weird that CPU-Z runs ONE time just after Windows start and when I close it and try to run again it hang/freeze entire PC. CPU-Z version 1.64 for sure is doing something dirty.
What you mean by "start in secured mode to avoid problems with other drivers/hardware" :?: Is there something called secured mode?
"run some benchmarks to warm up the cpu..." Well I can run many other games and programs and they don't crash itself if you ask for stability.
Besides there are other users from the site I heard about the game that also have factorio game crashing like me, but I suppose they are not going to register here to post bug report.

Anyway this is report I saved from CPU-Z if it can be any help:

not "secured mode", but "safe mode", mode where the system loads only minimal set of drivers and applications (I have no clue how would that help, though)

This caught my eye. Localization fallback to "non-engligh" ? :)
Is that some unusual edition?

The problem with CPU-Z is that it has some incopmpatibilities with some mainboard chipsets which can result in crashing the whole system.
I would reather recomend using SiSoftware Sandra which like COU-Z can give you tons of information about your computer.
I use SiSoftware Sandra a lot. I probably scaned and benchmarked more than a hundred different computers with it. And until now it never caused any computer crashes with exception of some extensive system benchmarks. And even those crashes were result of potentionaly faulty hardware (good for tracking computer problems)

You can download Sandra from here: http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/?d=&f=downandbuy&l=en&a=

NOTE: SiSoftware Sandra is only Windows compatible but it does support all windows versions from Windows 2000 to latests both 32 bit and 64bit arhitecture.

No that is standard Windows XP with aditional SP3 instaled. It also uses Slovenian Language Addon.

@ustar
Slovenian: Iz katerega dela Slovenije si? Če si kje iz Bele krajine se lahko zmeniva in se oglasim pri tebi in mogoče lažje vidim, kaj je problem:

English: From which part of Slovenia are you from? If you come from Bela krajina we can make a deal and I'll come to you and see if I can track this problem easier.
