In the beginning we will use separate shadows just for some entities. Drawing extra shadow for every entity on screen is also some performance penalty. But in theory if all the shadows were drawn separately then we can play with some transformations and see what we get.

A tip for future cube, Oculus bought and open sourced (MIT License, no commercial restrictions) RakNet, a great low level networking library designed for games. https://github.com/OculusVR/RakNet
I remember when we were looking into (not so long ago) it it was still payed :D

EDIT: oh they open sourced it last week - that explains it

For what it's worth, i'd prefer fuzzy, less accurate shadows if it meant they'd actually follow the light cycle correctly.

As long as the shadows would stay confined to one axis, it could work quite well indeed. Factorio wouldn't be the first and possible not even the last game to use that approach.

It would also make for a nice game mechanic as it would be easy to judge the time of day from shadows.

Try this, from main menu click About then click Check Updates. What happens?

Sorry for the trouble. Please start a bug reports thread and post the log file there (it is next to the saves and mods directories).
I have no idea what I'm talking about.
